Counterfactuals , Dispositions , and Conscious Experience : Essays on Entropy

چکیده
Chapter 1 of this thesis concerns counterfactual conditionals. David Lewis has offered a natural and influential analysis of counterfactuals. But the analysis fails to take into account the asymmetry of entropy, and comes to grief precisely because of that failure. The cause of the grief is that processes involving the increase of entropy are exceedingly sensitive to small changes in their final conditions. Chapter 2 concerns robust dispositions. Drop an ordinary rock into hydrofluoric acid, and-almost no matter what is going on far away-it will dissolve. In other words, the rock displays a disposition to dissolve that is robust with respect to small variations in its environment. Why is it that so many objects display robust dispositions to melt, cool down, explode, hatch, and so on? Because entropy increases over time. Chapter 3 concerns conscious experience. Take any world with fundamental dynamical laws rather like ours, but in which entropy doesn't increase. Take any system in that world that changes state by changing thermodynamically. That system has no experiences whatsoever. That's because (in such worlds), in order to have an experience it is necessary to display certain robust dispositions. And such systems fail to display the requisite dispositions. Thesis Supervisor: Ned Hall Title: Associate Professor

Epistemic Dispositions
In Briggs and Nolan 2012, we suggested that advocates of a Nozickian tracking theory of knowledge might do well to appeal to dispositions rather than counterfactuals. (Gundersen 2003 and 2010 makes a similar suggestion, though he prefers a dispositional account of counterfactuals that enables him to retain a conditional tracking analysis.) John Turri (2012) and Ben Bronner (2012) have offered a...
متن کاملThe Entropy Theory of Counterfactuals
I assess the thesis that counterfactual asymmetries are explained by an asymmetry of the global entropy at the temporal boundaries of the universe by developing a method of evaluating counterfactuals that includes, as a background assumption, the low entropy of the early universe. The resulting theory vindicates the common practice of holding the past mostly fixed under counterfactual suppositi...

Close Counterfactuals are alternatives to reality that "almost happened." A psychological analysis of close Counterfactuals offers insights into the underlying representation of causal episodes and the inherent uncertainty attributed to many causal systems. The perception and representation of causal episodes is organized around possible focal outcomes, evoking a schema of causal forces competi...
متن کاملThe Bare Metaphysical Possibility of Bare Dispositions
Many philosophers hold that all dispositions must have independent causal bases. I challenge this view, hence defending the possibility of bare dispositions. In part 1, I explain more fully what I mean by "disposition," "causal basis," and "bare disposition." In part 2, I consider the claim that the concept of a disposition entails that dispositions are not bare. dispositions necessarily have d...
متن کاملDispositions and Rational Explanation Forthcoming in The Possibility of Philosophical Understanding: Essays for Barry Stroud, Oxford University Press
Some philosophers hold that rational explanations—explanations of peoples’s attitudes and actions that cite their reasons for forming these attitudes or performing these actions—are dispositional. They hold that rational explanations do their explanatory work by representing these attitudes and actions as the product of dispositions or tendencies on the part of the person who has or performs th...
